MOTIVATION. What Motivates you and how to Stay Motivated

First, this weekend was too cold! We started our meeting this week with a tailgate that would commence with the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff versus Southern University and A&M College game at War Memorial Stadium. 100 Member Wendell Scales facilitated the lesson about motivation. What is motivation and how can young men stay motivated. Motivation is defined as the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something. Scales asked the young men what keeps them motivated? Some stated college, military and athletics.

Scales career is dedicated to assisting young men and women toward collegiate success at Lighthouse Academies Jacksonville. I (Henry North) teach students in professional school so the majority of my students are older, married and committed towards a Pharmacy degree. There is a huge time gap between 18- 22. Those are also some of the best years of your life. During this time most people go off to college and learn about their future career path. Some get married. Some join the military. You don’t want to waste these years.

During the meeting, two college presidents, UAPB Chancellor Laurence Alexander and Arkansas Baptist College Joseph Jones spoke about collegiate success. Both presidents would love to see you at their institutions in the near future. What would attract me to UAPB? UAPB has an amazing STEM center with great professors to work with, an emerging Nursing program, an award winning Aquatics and Fisheries program, Military Science, and the Marching Musical Machine of the Mid-South!

How do we motivate a young man at 12-18? One thing I ask is “What do you want to be when you grow up? The answer tells a lot about you. Your plans, desires and you true passion. There is only one wrong answer, “I don’t know.” Hopefully by the end of the Academy we will not have any “I don’t knows.”

Wendell discussed how recent family events had him take a pause but he is now on track. Overall, we had fun but Southern University and A&M College beat University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 47-40.
